When we started building Motives, one thing was clear: we wanted people to engage with our AI interviewer in a conversational, spoken way, with key insights supported by video clips of real humans.

This posed a challenge: if users are to interact with Motives as they would on a video call (like Google Meet or Zoom), the AI interviewer needed a visual identity that was animated and engaging.

Our goal was to make the interviewer human-like—but not too human. In a world of hyper-realistic, AI-generated visuals and deepfakes, we opted for simplicity. We also wanted the interviewer to be inclusive, adaptable, and neutral in terms of gender and ethnicity.

What we went with was a gestural, monochromatic drawing of a person with a simple blinking animation. It’s friendly yet unobtrusive — we've heard from interviewees that the neutral, open experience can make them especially comfortable opening up. It can also speak with different voices, accents, and languages for different audiences.
